French Ambassador to Armenia talks about relations, regrets closure of OSCE Office in Yerevan

01.06.2017. France is saddened by and sorry for closure of the OSCE Office in Yerevan, French Ambassador to Armenia Jean-François Charpentier stated at a press conference on Thursday.

In the diplomat’s words, the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) carries out an interesting and important activity.

“France, and not only in France, regrets the decision that was taken,” he noted.

“The Office was carrying out very important and interesting work, and it not only was implementing right management and successful work in democracy field, but also it included wide range of spheres, such nature protection, economy and etc. In this sense I attach importance to the recent visit of OSCE Secretary General to Armenia. He met with the country’s high-ranking leadership, a number of issues were discussed which will allow to continue the cooperation in future as well”, the French Ambassador said.

OSCE Secretary General Lamberto Zannier announced on May 18 that the organization has to launch the closing process of the OSCE Yerevan Office since consensus was not achieved over the Office’s further mandate.The OSCE Yerevan Office was opened in 2000.

French Ambassador to Armenia also said that Armenia and France need to give a new dynamics to their relations.

“France and Armenia always distinguished by good neighbor relations. We had many achievements in 25 years of cooperation, but there are several gaps that we need to pay attention to,” the Ambassador said.

According to him, it’s necessary to increase Armenians’ knowledge and fluency in French, as that area showed poor index in recent time.

Jean-Francois Charpentier’s next point was about the development of Armenian-French economic relations.

“Our cooperation in trade and economy is rather weak,” the Ambassador said.
